Diversity Statement

The Desiree Alliance conference organizers are committed to support for representation and inclusiveness of cultural, racial, economic, age, and gender identity. Please read our Diversity Statement and join our efforts to build a respectful, diverse, and strong sex worker movement.

Legislators of this century have continued to fail to realise that prostitutes are not a special breed of women with compulsions to indulge in criminal behaviour... socially, culturally and psychologically prostitute women pursue lifestyles little different to the millions of other single working women, wives and mothers in the... community. Popular mythology keeps prostitute women separated from other women in people's minds, while the law, founded as it is in 19th century puritanism, keeps them separated in the social order.

-Working girls: prostitutes, their life and social control by Roberta Perkins

Initiatives to “end demand” for prostitution harm women and undermine service programs!

"i thought i would write and say how much i enjoyed the desiree alliance
conference. i especially enjoyed being around so many empowered women, learning a lot, meeting and talking to so many cool people, and doing direct action on the strip! i'm glad i went for the entire conference, too. thanks for putting it together and inviting me!"

"I was one of the organisers of the Brussels conference last year so know how hard the Desiree Alliance worked for the Las Vegas event. The two situations, the EU and the USA, are different, so the conferences can't be compared exactly. The differences between them were maybe what I liked best, but in any case I had a very interesting time in Nevada and send congratulations to all involved."

"Congrats on that amazing gathering. I hope you were happy with it!"

"We'll do the Desiree Alliance ANYTIME!"

"The entire conference was way far beyond anything I could have ever expected or envisioned. It was professional, extremely interesting, very
informing/enlightening, progressive, and energizing... the conference brought
GREAT HEALING for my federally recognized Post Trauma Stress Disorder. I
am most grateful for the ensuing affinity groups as continued 'medication' for further healing. Thank you for this opportunity to express
myself."

"I can't say thanks enough.  This was life changing-I'll be at the next
one if time, money, and the universe allows!!!!"

"Just wanted to do a quick little shout out to say thank you again!"

"I thought it was a great event overall.. and the networking and
solidarity was very beneficial I think."

"[Holy Harlot Tantric Workshop was] mind-blowing and life-changing! More stuff like this to balance out the political/policy/academic stuff would be a great addition. And it seemed like all the participants got a lot out of it whether they were approaching it from a professional or personal standpoint or both."

"Carol Queen is simply awesome! It was a real privilege to meet one of my idols."

"I did really appreciate the opportunity to network with individuals on our own social time. I sincerely believe that with improved organization and planning that this conference can become an incredibly useful tool in the goal towards decriminalization. I look forward to attending as often as my schedule will allow."

"Is it true that there will be a next years conference?? I sure hope so!! The conference team organizers were very friendly and helpful all the time. Thank you! This conference was sooo valuable and inspriring. I loved it. I hope it continues annually. ...Many... areas of diversity were well represented. Nice job."

"Everything was wonderful and the team members were very helpful... Things seemed rushed. There was too much to the conference and not enough time was allowed for everything."

"Very inspirational, very powerful conference. I only wished there were two of me, so I could attend more workshops! "

"I wish that the workshops were not happening at the same time, because it was so hard to choose between them. I feel I could have gotten more from it but I guess it's really hard to plan perfectly for everyone. Thanks for listening."

"It felt like a good balance between academics and non-academics."

"[Funkaliscious] was so important. It really rounded up the experience nicely."

"What was eye opening for me is the fact that such a diverse cross section of the sex industry is here, from women who work the street (with no apologies!) to the legal brothel owners of Nevada, and on to the independent escorts. There were transgender providers, and people of nearly every race, age and you name the demographic. To be sure, there were a lot of view points on every issue and as this is their first conference, things were not that tightly organized, but I was very impressed with this as a first time meeting. People were overall, very cordial with one another despite the great diversity of experiences and opinions. For me it was a very eye opening and moving time.  I learned a lot about the lives and feelings of 'the other half'  so to speak. Seriously though, I think it is important for all ... to be aware of the coalition and support them in what ever way you chose to. [This] struggle is one that will help us all."

"I would like to thank Desiree Alliance and all those who helped coordinate this extraordinary conference. The amazing opportunity you provided me has already made a difference in my profession as a behavioral health counselor and I have enlightened my groups beyond their inhibited scopes, and hopefully, they may peel away their prejudices and open their eyes to a world that creates diversity. This will hopefully pay off in [our] jail program as well... I will diligently keep working toward a sex worker education class as I am determined since we cater to a large population of women who have exchanged some form of sex for money, they deserve to know their rights, to be acknowledged as human beings, and be educated that strength in numbers is needed in order to make change. The networking was fabulous and the many people I connected with will be allies for a lifetime, for this I thank you.

I wanted to personally become more educated on transgendered people and although I did not attend the conference for my academia (I am researching women and prison issues), I am currently writing a paper [on transgenders]. This conference rearranged my being and I always get excited when my world is transformed, it makes me such a better person! Everyone should have the opportunity to meet and socialize with the eclectic array of human beings that I had the chance to; the world needs to be more enlightened. Please keep me in mind for the next conference... Thank you again for the fabulous time and your charitable generosity."
